Finding Achroma (An Introduction)
On june 3rd 2023 I found the wonderful realms of Achroma during a visit to UK Games Expo and immediately fell in love with it.
The friendly passionate staff, the presentation of the boxes and the art work of the cards (which can hold some studio ghibli vibes to them) are what first drew me in.
I bought wishwell trolls limited edition boxset and a box of Occultists and went home to play my first games.
The mechanics of the game make it very unique and fun to play.
[Very basic outline of how it plays :
In canvas format (the 'standard' format) both players start with 10 shards. You either need to get to 30 shards (this is called a Chroma Win) or get your opponents down to 0 (this is an Achrom win).
"To play the cards, you pay the shards" if a character is worth 4 shards for example, then you deduct 4 to play it. Each card will resolve either gaining you shards or stealing/draining from your opponents shards. You also get steps were you can choose to Trade your card where you can gain its shards worth and discard it.]
I then found the discord and met the community, who are all brilliant. Very friendly and helpful people who are always around to have a laugh with, get advice from or play games with over webcam.
The main store in Poole has a lot of community events happening and atmosphere (I aim to visit soon but can see the great energy there from YouTube and other members posts).
But what is Achroma?
Here is a basic overall:
Achroma is 5 realms, one being Terra Planum which is our real realm and the other four realms are playable and collectable.
Norso Planum (trolls)
Salum Planum (witches)
Draco Planum (dragons)
Spirata Planum (fairies)
Decks have to be based on one of these realms (no mixing together). Each realm have different factions but can be mixed together when deck building.
The basic idea is we are in the age of Achrom, a new dark magic energy which is taking over and draining Chroma (the old 'good' magical energy).
What side will you fight for? or do you have your own agender?
This game is often played with the App, which helps count your shards (and other fun elements). Every win gets logged to see what side is winning more; Chroma or Achrom.
Each realm has chapters, a chapter ends with a Narrative event which is a month where all the wins will shape how that chapter ends; with achrom or chroma being dominant. This outcome will effect the lore and in turn will effect the game and cards that will come out in that realms next chapter.
I hope I have explained this well and in a way that may make you want to join.
